CAJAMARCA & surrounds (Peru)

Looking up towards Santa Apolonia Hill and the small  church on its flank

The view over Cajamarca from Santa Apolonia Hill

The baroque style Catedral de Santa Catalina (St. Catherine Cathedral) at the Plaza de Armas
On the left is the impressive clarín cajamarquino, which sounds  somewhat  like a vuvuzela (made infamous during the 2010 world cup in South Africa), but more tuneful (Plaza de Armas)
Iglesia de San Francisco (church of San Francisco) at the Plaza de Armas

El Cuarto del Rescate (Ransom Room) - the place where the Inca Empire is considered to have come to an end
El Cuarto del Rescate (Ransom Room) - this is where the Inca Emperor Atahualpa was held for ransom and which he filled with gold up to the height of his reach. Despite this he was still ultimately executed by the Spaniards

Celebrations as part of Fiestas Patrias (national holidays) at Plaza de Armas on the eve of Peru independence day on the 28th of July

Ventanillas de Otuzco (funery complex)

Jardín de hortensias gigantes (garden of giant hydrangeas)

Cumbe mayo and Los Frailones
Cumbe Mayo (an aquaduct) is one of the oldest man-made structures in South America (if not the oldest) and is located in an area of eroded volcanic rock pillars (Los Frailones), some of which are 60m high
Sometimes it is easier to take  a tour, but there can be mayhem. The tour company had everyone walk 5 or so blocks to 3 different locations to eventually be picked up by the bus, which promptly drove back to the office where we had started from
It was holiday time, hence the crowds at the  first part of Los Frailones (eroded volcanic rock pillars)

The zig-zag here slows the water flow
One of a number pf petroglyphs at Cumbe Mayo - some are thought to be astronomical charts and site maps
Note the perfect straight edge
Feria Fongal (agricultural, artisanal and tourism fair)
Claudia and Fatima offered to show me around and I had lunch with Fatima's family, which was delicious. The fair was nearby.
